The 15th annual AEF Knowledge Open was held at Winagamie Golf Club on Friday, July 19. A sold-out field of 144 golfers took to the links to raise funds for the Appleton Education Foundation’s mission: to creatively enhance education in our community.
AEF supporters and event sponsors, along with AASD staff members, retirees and parents represented 16 AASD schools to compete for more than $11,000 in grant money.
The event included the Masters Knowledge Challenge, a multiple-choice quiz answered by teams during their round of play. Quiz scores were factored into the golf scores to determine the top teams.
In honor of the event’s 15th anniversary, the top 15 teams earned unrestricted grants for their designated school. Winners of hole events, teams with the highest quiz score and lowest gross scramble score did the same. The fifteenth person to register in the morning won a surprise grant of $500 for their school.
Earning top honors for the day was a team from Grant Thornton that included Larry Bovee, Jennifer Potter, Terry Abraham, and Bob Nigh. They earned $1,700 for Appleton Career Academy.
Wilson Middle School parent Scott Gehl completed a hole-in-one on hole 17 with a seven iron. Wilson will receive a $500 grant in honor of this accomplishment.
These grants can be used as the schools’ principals see fit. For example, West High School and Richmond Elementary will use the funds to improve technology in classrooms; whereas, Central High School will use its winnings to continue the Wisconsin Avenue Planter Project that was started in 2012 with a “Choose Your Focus” grant from the AEF.
