This week, the Appleton Education Foundation board of directors approved 7 grants totaling nearly $12,000 to strengthen and enhance education for students in the Appleton Area School District.
All funding is from the Appleton Education Foundation Fund, unless otherwise noted.
Appleton Area School District
- $1,600 to support a Hmong Family Literacy Night at Hmong American Immersion School, in partnership with Fox Valley Literacy, featuring interactive storytelling, cultural activities, bilingual literacy strategies, and free books for families. (Funding provided by the Bob and Gerri Heffron Family Endowment Fund.)
- $1,850 to support nurse-led sessions for families in the Even Start Family Literacy and AASD Parents and Teachers programs, offering hands-on guidance around navigating health care resources and using basic first aid supplies. (Funding provided by the Bob and Gerri Heffron Family Endowment Fund.)
- $3,000 to pilot curling as a new high school PE curriculum offering.
- $500 to support students in building executive functioning skills—focus, memory, and self-control—to lay the foundation for academic and lifelong success.
- $400 for professional development in cellular and molecular biotechnology, preparing AASD to develop and pilot a high school biotech course that strengthens real-world science instruction and career readiness.
James Madison Middle School
- $2,567 to expand access to high-interest books and strengthen literacy, student choice, and a schoolwide reading culture. (Partial funding provided by the Forrest and Roberta Sprowl Fund.)
Wilson Middle School
- $1,906 to purchase an electric viola, expanding opportunities for viola students to participate in the electric strings unit.
