Last week, the Appleton Education Foundation board of directors approved 21 grants totaling more than $19,000 to strengthen and enhance education for students in the Appleton Area School District.
All funding is from the Appleton Education Foundation Fund, unless otherwise noted.
Appleton Area School District
- $1,400 to support Brag Tags as incentives to motivate students to read diverse genres. This will be piloted at select elementary school(s). (Funding provided by the Jeanne Klatt Stilp Memorial Endowment Fund.)
- $1,187 for soft helmets to support inclusive participation in the FVA Adapted Sports League for students with disabilities. (Funding provided by the Betsy Melzer Endowment Fund.)
- $500 to provide books for children who attend developmental screenings. (Funding provided by the John Mielke and Sally Morey Mielke Education Fund.)
Appleton East High School
- $500 for a study on neurosurgery techniques. Psychology II students will work with Lawrence University students.
Appleton West High School
- $1,000 to support a free community event featuring cultural performances, crafts, food, and resource booths.
- $500 for a book study to help student athletes further develop leadership and teamwork skills. (Funding provided by the SAACC Endowment Fund.)
Einstein Middle School
- $480 for a project that uses art to help grow intergenerational bonds between students and residents at Rennes Health and Rehab Center. (Funding provided by the Scheuermen Family Fund and the Lee and Amy Allinger Education Fund.)
James Madison Middle School
- $1,456 to support Sources of Strength, a program that uses peer leaders and adult advisors to promote positive messaging that supports youth mental health and resilience. (Funding provided by the Gruner Family Community Mental Wellness Fund.)
Kaleidoscope Academy
- $305 to fund arts integration supplies to enhance student learning in science classes.
- $175 for newcomer students to participate in bucket drumming. (Funding provided by the Bob and Gerri Heffron Family Endowment Fund.)
Wilson Middle School
- $500 to support English Learning students developing their speaking skills through recorded practice and reflection. (Funding provided by the Bob and Gerri Heffron Family Endowment Fund.)
Badger Elementary School
- $200 for Filipino Tinikling sticks to foster cultural learning through music and movement. (Funding provided by the Scheuerman Family Fund.)
Edison Elementary School
- $457 to bring hands-on environmental learning in partnership with Apple Creek YMCA. (Funding provided by the Scheuerman Family Fund and the Lee and Amy Allinger Education Fund.)
Fox River Academy
- $1,015 to build and maintain a community garden on school grounds. (Funding provided by the Vira and Alan Stoner Education Fund.)
Franklin Elementary School
- $480 to strengthen home-school collaboration and support student growth through a staff-parent book study on Raising Mentally Strong Kids. (Partial funding provided by the Scheuerman Family Fund.)
- $299 to enhance math and science learning with videos, lessons, and interactive activities.
Horizons Elementary School (and Richmond Elementary School)
- $1,302 to bring speakers from the UW-Whitewater Wheelchair Basketball Team to promote resilience, disability awareness, and inclusivity through storytelling and basketball. (Funding provided by the Betsy Melzer Endowment Fund.)
Houdini Elementary School
- $2,159 to fund a communication board to help students with special needs express themselves. (Funding provided by the Connie Pitt Memorial Endowment Fund and the Betsy Melzer Endowment Fund.)
- $1,368 to enhance STEM learning, creativity, and collaboration through a recess LEGO Club.
Richmond Elementary School
- $809 for Yoto players, sensory-friendly audio tools, that promote independence, confidence, and inclusive. (Funding provided by the Gruner Family Community Mental Wellness Fund.)
The Omolade Academy
- $3,000 to implement the African-Centered Innovation and Storytelling Studio, which blends cultural storytelling, and STREEAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Entrepreneurship, Arts, and Mathematics) to celebrate heritage and foster creativity.
