This week, the Appleton Education Foundation board of directors approved 13 grants totaling more than $14,000 to strengthen and enhance education for students in the Appleton Area School District.
All funding is from the Appleton Education Foundation Fund, unless otherwise noted.
Appleton Area School District
- $3,500 to support a phone-free/screen-free lunch initiative in AASD middle schools and encourage students to engage in social and physical activities during this time.
Appleton East High School
- $1,750 for a heat press that will provide students with hands-on business experience. Students will learn entrepreneurship, marketing, and financial management skills as they create items for the school store. (Funding provided by the Erik J. Lang Business Education Fund.)
- $427 to purchase safety-enhancing belay devices for rock climbing in physical education courses and expand accessibility. (Funding provided by the Vira and Alan Stoner Education Fund and the Scheuerman Family Fund.)
Appleton West High School
- $500 to purchase additional supplies for the Makerspace, which will allow students to explore creativity and hands-on learning. (Funding provided by the Vira and Alan Stoner Education Fund.)
Appleton Central Program
- $700 to provide updated supplies for indoor growing systems used in science classes. (Funding provide by the Vira and Alan Stoner Education Fund.)
Kaleidoscope Academy
- $500 to strengthen staff expertise in arts-integrated learning through a staff professional development experience at the Trout Museum of Art.
- $460 for a GoPro camera to enhance instruction in cooking classes and support student-created promotional videos. (Funding provided by the Scheuerman Family Fund.)
Appleton Public Montessori
- $1,614.50 to foster a shared love of reading and family engagement through a schoolwide book read that also honors the school’s virtues of courage, friendship, kindness, resilience and teamwork. (Partial funding provided by the John Mielke and Sally Morey Mielke Education Fund.)
Highlands Elementary School
- $430 to implement a program that supports emotional intelligence, focus, and positive peer relationships. (Funding provided by the Gruner Family Community Mental Wellness Fund and the Bob and Gerri Heffron Family Endowment Fund.)
Houdini Elementary School
- $450 for hands-on manipulatives to help special education students build functional math skills.
Jefferson Elementary School & Fox River Academy
- $324.26 for parachutes, stretchy bands, and agility hoops, to promote movement activities in music classes. Movement increases student engagement and learning. (Partial funding provided by the John Mielke and Sally Morey Mielke Education Fund.)
Ronald C. Dunlap Elementary School
- $500 to incorporate LEGO activities for students in special education classrooms, as a way to encourage creativity, develop fine motor skills, and increase social interaction.
Empowered Tutoring Inc.
- $3,000 to provide tutoring support for students at six Appleton elementary schools.
